A fan suffered serious injuries at Fenway Park on Friday after she was struck in the head by a broken bat. Fans in the area said the woman was hit on the top of the head and forehead, according to the Boston Globe. She has been transported to a local hospital after being taken out of the stands on a stretcher.

The incident occurred during the top of the second inning when a pitch caused Brett Lawrie to break his bat and pieces went flying into the crowd. The woman was sitting down the third base line. According to the Boston Globe, she was sitting with a man and her son at the game.

The situation caused the game to be delayed as the woman was tended to by medical personnel and taken off the field. It turned into a scary situation with the woman reportedly bleeding profusely. Complete details of her injuries remain unknown.

UPDATE (June 6): On Saturday, the Red Sox released a statement regarding the injury: “A woman was injured by a broken bat that flew into the stands in the top of the second inning of last night’s game. The fan was immediately transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where she is being treated. All of us offer our prayers and our thoughts as we wish her a speedy recovery.”
