Astros acquire Carlos Gomez, Mike Fiers from Brewers

On the day before baseball's non-waiver trade deadline, the Houston Astros made another big splash, acquiring outfielder Carlos Gomez and starting pitcher Mike Fiers from the Milwaukee Brewers, both teams announced.

The deal was first reported by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports and Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

The Brewers will receive outfielders Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana, left-handed pitcher Josh Hader and right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser in return, plus international bonus pool slot No. 76, worth $287,500 for the 2015-2016 international signing period.

Gomez was nearly traded to the Mets on Wednesday, but the trade fell through at the last moment for various reasons, some claiming financial, some saying health issues. Gomez, 29, is hitting .262/.328/.423 with eight home runs and 20 doubles this season.

He is making $8 million this season, and is under contract for another $9 million in 2016.

Fiers, 30, is 5-9 with a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts for Milwaukee this season, with 121 strikeouts in 118 innings. He won’t be eligible for free agency until after the 2019 season.

The Astros (57-45), in first place in the American League West by one game over the Angels, already made one big acquisition last week, acquiring Scott Kazmir from the Athletics. Houston on Wednesday designated starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez for assignment.
