MLB All-Star Game 2015 rosters: Royals get 4 starters, Josh Donaldson leads voting

The 2015 MLB All-Star Game starters were announced Sunday night on ESPN. Josh Donaldson led all vote-getting and set the all-time single-season record. Meanwhile, Bryce Harper was the highest vote-getter in the history of the National League with nearly 14 million votes. In the American League, the Royals led all teams with four starters.

The starters, eight National League players and nine American League players, were selected entirely by fan votes. Every position for both sides was elected by fans except the starting pitchers, reserve players and the designated hitter for the National League. Those remaining starters will be selected by AL manager Ned Yost and NL manager Bruce Bochy.

The reserves will be announced on Monday night at 7 p.m. on another ESPN selection show. The rest of each squad’s 34-player rosters will be determined by the players themselves and the managers. The players elect nine backup players for the AL squad, eight backup players for the NL squad and eight pitchers apiece -- five starters and three relievers. Bochy and the Yost fill out the rest of the roster except for one spot.

The 34th player on each squad will be selected by a second online fan vote, the “Esurance MLB All-Star Game Final Vote,” from a pool of five players compiled by the managers after the first 33 players on each team are announced.

Two starters are currently injured and will be unable to participate in the All-Star Game. Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera (Grade 3 left calf strain) and Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton (broken hamate bone in left hand) are both currently on the disabled list. Replacements for both will be selected by their respective managers.

In addition, St. Louis Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday is currently on the DL with a Grade 2 torn right quad. His participation is questionable. Injured players chosen to participate in the MLB All-Star Game may still attend the festivities if they choose, and their status as an All-Star will not change. The only obvious difference is an injured player cannot play in the actual game.
