As for what we're going to be doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that Mike Trout is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap that way and get stuck praying to the baseball gods that a guy like Wilmer Flores actually gets a few hits. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Below is the lineup I'll be using for Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Pitcher
Chris Sale, White Sox ($12,800): Sale's on one of his strikeout streaks, which is why he's worth reaching for on Tuesday. On the season he's got a 2.38 FIP and is striking out 12 batters per nine innings, and over his last three starts the southpaw has whiffed 36 batters over 21 innings and allowed just three earned runs. The Twins, whom Sale is facing on Tuesday, have struck out in 24 percent of their at-bats over the last 30 days, the second-highest number in baseball over that span.
Catcher
Salvador Perez, Royals ($2,300): Need to shop in the bargain bin after selecting Sale. Perez, who is batting .450/.816/1.266 for his career in 38 at-bats against Justin Verlander, and will face him on Tuesday, is as strong a bargain find as you can hope for.
First Base
Darin Ruf, Phillies ($2,300): Ruf gets Ryan Howard's at-bats when the Phillies face lefties and on Tuesday Philly is facing a struggling one in Mets hurler Jonathon Niese. Niese made five starts in August and had a 5.17 ERA. Ruf, on the other hand, is hitting .365/.430/.581 with four home runs in 74 at-bats this season against left-handers.
Second Base
Anthony Rendon, Nationals ($3,200): He's finally starting to look like the player who was one of the best hitters in the National League last season. Rendon is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak and on Tuesday he gets to face a struggling starter in Cardinals hurler Carlos Martinez.
Third Base
Evan Longoria, Rays ($3,400): Another bet on a career matchup. Longoria has faced Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman 43 times. In those at-bats he's collected 16 hits, six of which have been home runs.
Shortstop
Ruben Tejada, Mets ($2,300): The Mets take on struggling pitcher Aaron Harang Tuesday night, owner of a 4.79 ERA. As if that wasn't bad enough, Harang surrendered 25 earned runs in 28 innings in August. Also, Harang and Tejada have faced each other 21 times before, with eight of those at-bats ending in hits.
Outfield
Curtis Granderson, Mets ($3,400): Aaron Harang's recent struggles are detailed above. Granderson has also crushed righties all season (.290/.392/.530 with 22 home runs).
Jacoby Ellsbury, Yankees ($3,400): The Yankees outfielder is a ridiculous 11-for-17 with four home runs in his career against Red Sox starter Rick Porcello.
Jeff Francoeur, Phillies ($2,900): Frenchy, who's been one of this season's pleasant surprises, gets to tee off of Niese Tuesday night. That he has the advantage as a right hander facing a southpaw makes this matchup even better.
