ESPN Sunday Night Baseball broadcaster Curt Schilling will not call another game for the network for the remainder of the 2015 regular season nor will he call the American League Wild Card Game, the network announced on Thursday.
ESPN replaces Curt Schilling with Jessica Mendoza for remainder of 2015
Schilling got into trouble with the network for tweeting a meme comparing Muslims to Nazis on Aug. 25, though it was hardly the first time Schilling has shared anti-Muslim sentiments on social media.
ESPN at the time took Schilling off of its Little League World Series coverage, and suspended him for the Aug. 25 Sunday Night Baseball broadcast, which happened to be a no-hitter by Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now, Schilling won’t appear on any of the remaining Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts this season, nor will he appear on the ESPN broadcast of the American League Wild Card Game on Tues., Oct. 6.
“At all times during the course of their engagement with us, our commentators are directly linked to ESPN and are the face of our brand. We are a sports media company,” ESPN said in a statement. “Curt’s actions have not been consistent with his contractual obligations nor have they been professionally handled; they have obviously not reflected well on the company. As a result, he will not appear on ESPN through the remainder of the regular season and our Wild Card playoff game.”
Schilling has been replaced by Jessica Mendoza, who originally took over for Schilling on this past week’s broadcast of Sunday Night Baseball as the first woman announcer on an ESPN MLB broadcast. There is still no word on how permanent of a replacement this is, but ESPN is not being shy about going back to Mendoza after a successful first game.
