Thanks to rainouts on Tuesday, Wednesday is suddenly a ridiculous day for baseball that matters. There are three doubleheaders, all with playoff implications, and that doesn’t even include the contests the Angels and Astros are playing in. The Cardinals and Pirates will face off twice, at a time when the Cardinals are attempting to secure the NL Central (they’re four games up with five to play) and win 100 games for the first time since 2005. The Pirates are obviously running out of time to win the Central and avoid the NL Wild Card Game, but even outside of that, they’re attempting to secure home field for that first playoff round. Winning both games today, coupled with a Chicago loss, would put them out of reach of the Cubs, who are three back with just five to go.
You’ve also got the Blue Jays facing the Orioles: Toronto got the help they needed from the Red Sox to clinch the AL East on Tuesday, but since they were rained out, they couldn’t capitalize. Their magic number is now one, though, with two games to play on Wednesday, so they can clinch with one victory or another Yankees defeat. New York’s own fate is tied to the last of these three doubleheaders, as the Twins and Indians will face off twice on Wednesday, as well. If New York manages to defeat the Sox, then either a Twins loss or one of the Angels or Rangers taking the L will secure a playoff spot for the Yanks. So, things could get interesting heading into these last four games if the Yankees lose again and all three of those teams are victorious on Wednesday.
As for the Angels, they now lead the second Wild Card by a half-game over the Astros and are just 1.5 up on the Twins. They get to face the Barry Zito Retirement Tour on Wednesday thanks to the season-ending injury to Sonny Gray, which probably doesn’t make the Astros happy. But, uh, they aren’t exactly a team in a position to be mad about someone else’s losing-season roster decisions.
- Don't tell Cardinals' fans, but their team is resilient and amazing this year.
- Ugh, one of you told them didn't you, DIDN'T YOU ... now they've released this awful, terrible, embarrassing rap song onto the Internet so we'd stop appreciating them. Your punishment: listen to it.
- MLBAM does not making loving and sharing baseball easy in the social media age.
- The Dodgers won the NL West and were accidentally crowned the NL Champions instead.
- Los Angeles will open the NLDS against the Mets on Oct. 9, which means this series will feature Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey. Someone loaded with aces is going down early.
- The Padres are expected to officially announce Don Orsillo as Dick Enberg's successor soon.
- The Braves are a mess in 2015, but they aren't the NL East's biggest mess, so that's something.
- The Jeff Samardzija era with the White Sox is likely over, and it wasn't that exciting.
- Billy Bean has been a success as MLB's ambassador for inclusion.
- The Red Sox rotation was a problem in the first half, but it's been a strength since they cut out the struggling veterans and added some kids. So, how many starters do they need for 2016?
