As for what we're going to be doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that Mike Trout is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap that way and get stuck praying to the baseball gods that a guy like Ruben Tejada actually gets a few hits. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Below are three players to target and three to avoid for Sept. 4-6.
3 players to target
Carlos Gonzalez , OF, Rockies: This season Gonzalez is hitting .302/.363/.645 off right-handers and 304/.361/.639 at home. Of his 35 home runs, 31 have come when facing righties and 21 of those dingers have come at Coors Field. Guess what kind of matchups he has this weekend? Yep, righties -- Giants starers Chris Heston and Jake Peavy -- and he'll be playing in Colorado. Gonzalez is also working on a four-game hitting streak, and the one lefty he'll face this weekend, Madison Bumgarner, he surprisingly kills (15 hits and five home runs in 43 at-bats). Keep Gonzalez in your lineup all weekend.
Jacob deGrom , P, Mets: The pitcher to build your weekend around. deGrom takes the hill Friday in Miami and gets to face a Marlins team with the worst wOBA against right-handers in baseball. Making the matchup even better: In two career starts at Marlins Park deGrom has surrendered just one earned run in 13 innings.
Darin Ruf, 1B, Phillies: The man to target when you're trying to save a few bucks. Ruf has become the Phillies' starting first-baseman when the team faces left-handers -- and for good reason: he's hitting .377/.438/.623 off of them with five home runs in 77 at-bats. He'll see the field twice this weekend against Boston: Saturday when Wade Miley takes the hill and Sunday against Eduardo Rodriguez. Ruf should be in your lineup both those days.
3 players to avoid
Adam Jones , OF, Orioles: It's been a struggle at the plate for Jones recently. After hitting just. 241 in August he's yet to get on base in September. Jones' price has dropped to $3,000, but that's not low enough to make him worth a flyer. Also, he has to face David Price and the resurgent Drew Hutchinson this weekend. Keep away until he completely turns things around.
Chris Archer, P, Rays: This is more about Archer's matchup than his ability. The Rays flamethrower will be traveling north to New York to take on a Yankees team with a .323 wOBA against right-handers, the third-best number in baseball. The Yankees are also striking out at a low rate when facing righties, meaning it's going to be difficult for Archer to rack up a high FanDuel score.
Victor Martinez, C, Tigers: For one, the Tigers are facing the Indians this weekend, owners of the highest team strikeout-rate in baseball. More problematic, though, is the fact that Martinez is hitting an awful .188/.240/.291 since the All-Star Game.
Other notables
If you're looking for a cheap starter to gamble on Friday night, Yankees right-hander Luis Severino is a good option. He has a 2.17 ERA over 29 innings and gets to face the impotent Rays lineup. ... Joey Votto gets to face three right-handers this weekend. He's hitting .316/.458/.578 off righties this season and a ridiculous .399/.576/.748 since the All-Star Game. ... The Cubs are whiffing in a league-hight 25.9 percent of their at-bats against southpaws this season. ... Diamondbacks hurler Robbie Ray, who gets the ball on Saturday, could be a good option.
