The Cubs are going to their first World Series in 71 years

Sunday’s Say Hey, Baseball is enjoying all the Cubs-related celebration while being sad for the Dodgers, too.

Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. There are all kinds of stories, rumors, game coverage and Vines of dudes getting hit in the beans every day. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. It’s OK, though, we’re going to do the heavy lifting for you each morning, and find the things you need to see from within the SB Nation baseball network, as well as from elsewhere. Please hold your applause until the end, or at least until after you subscribe to the newsletter.

There’s only one thing to talk about, and that’s the National League Champion Chicago Cubs. They beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, and their own past, to make it to their first World Series since 1945. They did it, it’s really happening, and the 5-0 score proves it.

Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks was in control from the get go. He allowed a single to Andrew Toles to start the game, and then retired 22 straight batters. Hendricks did exactly what he’s been doing the entire season, and the Dodgers didn’t really have a chance. Clayton Kershaw just didn’t have it, abandoning his curveball throwing the Cubs pitches they could hit. He allowed three doubles and two solo homers, and after one of them he shouted “NO!” and crumpled to the ground in the most heartbreaking way possible. (This game might haunt him.) Kershaw lasted just five innings and gave up all five runs before Kenley Jansen came on for the final three frames. The Dodgers managed just two hits all night. It’s a tough, tough loss for the Dodgers. Their drought isn’t as long as the Cubs’, but they wanted it just as much and they fought hard. They’ve now set the record for most consecutive trips to the postseason without reaching the World Series, and that’s definitely not the kind of history they wanted to be making.

The celebration in Chicago has been epic. Eddie Vedder was riding on someone’s shoulders in the Cubs’ clubhouse. Dorothy the elderly Cubs fan wanted some Jaegermeister. John Lackey wore the most America shorts ever. Bill Murray was so happy it looked like he was weeping. (Who could blame him?) Bullpen catcher Chad Noble stripped down to his hot dog speedo and danced around. Dwayne Wade and LeBron James are making a friendly wager on the World Series. Longtime Cubs fan Hilary Clinton made the best face when she saw the Cubs win. Bob Newhart celebrated with his adorable grandchildren and a W flag that they made him. All the celebration is great, but it comes down to this: two of the best teams in baseball with two of the longest title droughts are going to the World Series. Baseball is so amazing.
