Jake Arrieta picked up right were he left off last season. The Chicago Cubs ace and reigning National League Cy Young Award winner threw the first no-hitter of the 2016 campaign on Thursday night, beating the Cincinnati Reds 16-0 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

Arrieta had two hits and a walk while batting, and allowed no hits on the mound, his second no-hitter in as many seasons.

It is the second career no-hitter for Arrieta, who blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 30, 2015.
Arrieta struck out six in his first complete game of the season and walked four batters — Jay Bruce in the second inning, Eugenio Suarez in the fourth, Scott Schebler in the sixth and ninth innings. Arrieta threw 119 pitches on the night.

The Cubs right-hander is 4-0 with a minuscule 0.87 ERA in his four starts this season, allowing only three runs in his 31 innings on the season. Dating back the 2015 All-Star break, Arrieta has allowed just 15 runs (12 earned runs) in 19 starts, going 16-1 with an 0.78 ERA during that span.
In 11 of those 19 starts, Arrieta has allowed zero runs, and with the no-hitter he has an active scoreless streak of 19 consecutive innings.
At the plate, Arrieta was 2-for-4 with a walk, and even scored a run. The Cubs scored early with two runs in the first then two more in the second inning, then put the game away with four-run rallies in both the sixth and seventh innings.
It marked the first time the Reds were no-hit in a regular season game since Rick Wise of the Philadelphia Phillies did so on June 23, 1971.
The Reds' streak of regular season games with at least 1 hit is 7,109. It is the longest active regular season streak in the Major Leagues.

But more recently, Cincinnati was no-hit by Roy Halladay in Game 1 of the 2010 NLDS, just the second postseason no-hitter in MLB history.
With the win, Chicago improved to 12-4 and has outscored its opponents by 60 runs this season.
