Cubs’ Kyle Schwarber out for year with torn ACL & LCL

The Chicago Cubs are expected to be without Kyle Schwarber for the rest of the season, announcing on Friday that the outfielder has torn both his ACL and LCL stemming from an outfield collision on Thursday night, per Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Schwarber ran into Dexter Fowler in Thursday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and had to be carted off the field. Initial X-rays were negative and he was diagnosed with a left ankle sprain, but the MRI results Friday revealed the much more serious injuries.

In addition to the torn ACL and LCL, Schwarber did also suffer a severe ankle sprain, per Carrie Muskat of MLB.com.

The 23-year-old Schwarber was one of the bright spots on arguably the most talented roster in baseball. He was a force in his rookie season in 2015, slugging 16 home runs in 69 games for the Cubs while hitting .246/.355/.487, then adding five more home runs in nine games during the postseason as Chicago made their way to the National League Championship Series.

The injury to Schwarber likely means more playing time in the outfield for Jorge Soler, 24, who hit .262/.324/.399 with 10 home runs in 101 games for Chicago in 2015.
