Noah Syndergaard is first MLB pitcher in 9 years to hit 2 home runs in a game

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard goes by the nickname Thor, and on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium he brought the thunder, becoming the first pitcher in nine seasons to hit two home runs in one game.

Syndergaard hit a solo home run off Los Angeles Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda in the third inning, then smacked another one in the fifth, this time a three-run shot. Entering Wednesday, Syndergaard was 0-for-8 with six strikeouts at the plate on the season.

Thor became the first pitcher two hit two home runs in one game since Micah Owings did it for Arizona on Aug. 18 2007. Syndergaard's four RBI tied a Dodger Stadium single-game record for a pitcher.

Syndergaard did his usual good work on the mound, allowing two runs in eight innings, with six strikeouts and a walk for the win. But it was the two home runs that set his game apart.

“I go out and focus on what I have to do on the mound, and anything extra is great,” he told reporters after the game.

It has been quite a productive road trip at the plate for Mets pitchers. They got doubles from Matt Harvey on Sunday in San Diego and from Steven Matz on Monday night in Los Angeles. Those followed the wonderful moment from Saturday when Bartolo Colon hit his first major league home run.

On the road trip, Mets pitchers are 6-for-18 (.333) with four runs scored and seven RBI in seven games. That will get it done.
