The draft is over, so it’s time for trade season
Sunday’s Say Hey includes the next stage of the season after the draft, some bad injury news for the Mariners and Pirates, and free shoulder rubs in Minnesota.

* * *
The season is flying by, and now we’re officially done with the draft with the third and final day wrapping up on Saturday. Day three of the MLB draft is the strangest of the days, with a whopping thirty rounds passing by at a rapid pace. Of course, these aren’t top prospects being selected in these rounds. Instead, it’s mostly great names and sons of former players. In fact, Ken Griffey Jr.’s son was picked by the Mariners despite not being a baseball player. That’s not to say there was no talent selected on Saturday, though. Either way, now that the draft is over we can officially move on to the next portion of the season: Trade season. Well, I supposed international free agency would technically be the next event on the list, but that’s mostly finished before it starts.
No, trade season is the next part of the year to get truly excited for as a fan. Obviously, this isn’t a perfect line of demarcation considering James Shields and Jason Grilli have already swapped teams. However, front offices and scouts are no longer completely focused on amateur talent, giving them more time to figure out which pro players will be a good fit in their organizations. The rumors should be fast and furious beginning pretty soon.
This year, it already looks as if a whole bunch of interesting names should be available. Even better, the American League picture already looks completely muddled, and the trade target list should gain some new names as teams fall out of the race. There could be some spare deals happening here and there over the next few weeks, but real trades likely won’t start coming at a good pace for another month or so. Still, with the draft over, teams are officially looking towards the trade deadline, so make sure you keep your eye on the rumor mill.
- Speaking of the trade deadline, the Cardinals expect to be buyers, and have a long history of choosing the correct prospects to deal.
- In case you’re still catching up on the draft as a whole, Grant has you covered with his first round grades.
- Before Saturday even finished, Seattle had already agreed to a deal with their first round pick, Kyle Lewis.
- It wasn’t all good news for the Mariners though. Not only did they blow last night’s game in very Mariners fashion, but they learned Felix Hernandez could miss another month.
- David Ortiz is stressing out his opponents with his spectacular final season, but he apparently realizes it and is giving out free shoulder rubs.
- The Marlins took a chance on Mat Latos last season, and it didn’t work out. With the pitcher available again, should Miami take the same chance?
- It wasn’t that long ago when Matt Moore looked like the next big thing on the mound. Now, the Rays need to figure out what to do with him.
- The Pirates got some rough injury news yesterday, learning that they’d be without Francisco Cervelli due to a broken bone in his hand.
- The Rockies lost their closer, which obviously sucks. However, their new closer is named Carlos Estevez, which is awesome for a variety of reasons.
