The Marlins and Rockies set a home run record
Tuesday’s Say Hey, Baseball recognizes a new mark for dingers, College World Series results, and the Mets’ sudden interest in Jose Reyes.

The Rockies beat the Marlins 5-3 on Monday, which without a closer look is a pretty standard affair. Once you do stare a little harder at the boxscore, though, you’d realize this was one weird, record-setting game: the Rockies and Marlins hit eight — eight! — solo home runs, meaning every run scored in the game came via the long ball. That’s the most runs ever scored in a game where every run was scored on a solo shot, and the previous record was just five.
The Marlins got dingers from Marcell Ozuna in the first and fourth innings, as well as a blast from Giancarlo Stanton in the first, with all three coming off of Jorge De La Rosa. Marlins’ starter Paul Clemens also gave up three homers: one to Trevor Story, one to Mark Reynolds, and another to Nick Hundley. Reynolds would add a second off of reliever Brian Ellington in the sixth, then Charlie Blackmon would go yard for the final homer of the night in the ninth off of Nick Wintgren.
What makes this just a little bit more ridiculous is that the two teams weren’t playing in the thin, hitter-friendly air of Colorado: this game came in pitcher-friendly Miami. Baseball continues to surprise somehow.

- The Marlins are tied for a wild card spot, and they aren’t going away, either. They’re doing this well without Giancarlo Stanton hitting like Giancarlo Stanton.
- This has apparently frightened the Mets, who are now considering bringing in Jose Reyes to play the infield for them. Reyes, in case you have forgotten, was designated for assignment by the Rockies after a suspension for domestic abuse that he received following his arrest for grabbing his wife by the throat and shoving her into a sliding glass door in a hotel room, causing injury to her thigh, neck, and wrists. Who cares about all that when you have ballgames to win, though? Terry Collins might not, considering how he recently talked up Reyes’ "bubbly" clubhouse personality.
- In news that doesn’t concern Baseball’s love of bargains and wins above all else: Miami is out of the College World Series after consecutive losses.
- The Rangers reportedly wouldn’t part with Jurickson Profar in a trade for the Braves’ Julio Teheran.
- The Indians showed LeBron James and the NBA Finals Trophy on their Kiss Cam.
- Sign this lady up, this is a great barehanded catch after a bad hope.
- Kenley Jansen set the Dodgers’ all-time saves record with number 162.
- The inevitable turning point in the Royals’ window of opportunity is coming, and what they decide to do with it is going to be very important.
- The Cubs placed Dexter Fowler on the disabled list and called up Carl Edwards Jr.
- Rusney Castillo cleared waivers, so the Red Sox outrighted him to Triple-A. This takes him off the 40-man roster, which also means his $10.4 million average annual value will no longer count against the luxury tax threshold. That opens some budget up this summer for a trade.
- Watch Miguel Cabrera hit a baseball completely out of Comerica.
