The Dodgers and Rays are talking trade, but for who?

Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. There are all kinds of stories, rumors, game coverage and Vines of dudes getting hit in the beans every day. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. The trade deadline is Aug. 1 this year — usually it’s July 31, but that’s a Sunday, so MLB pushed things back a day. As we’re about two-thirds of the way through July, we’re going to start seeing a whole bunch of rumors pop up, many of which will never come to pass — but that won’t be the case for all of them. We might end up seeing some rumors that come true eventually, just not by Aug. 1: Red Sox interest in Craig Kimbrel last deadline took until the offseason to result in a deal, and similarly, it took until this July for the Padres to get Anderson Espinoza, a pitcher they wanted from the Sox last summer.

So, while it’s easy to dismiss Jon Paul Morosi’s report on potential Dodgers’ interest in Rays’ third baseman Evan Longoria in the present, it’s precisely the kind of interest that could pop back up after the season ends, only then resulting in a trade. Justin Turner will be a free agent then. Andrew Friedman, current Dodgers’ President of Baseball Operations, was the Rays’ general manager when Longoria was both drafted and signed the deal he’s on for the next six years and $99 million. It might be a difficult move to make in-season, but the Rays are in last place and Longoria isn’t getting any younger, so a deal could happen soon even if it doesn’t happen immediately.

That’s just speculation, though. Morosi himself pivots from Longoria to suggest that, in the present, someone like Logan Forsythe is probably the more immediate target for the Dodgers. A Longoria swap shouldn’t be out of the question, though, not with the Rays’ tendency to deal stars for prospects and the Dodgers’ ability to absorb money. It’s just unlikely that’s the first deal these two sides make over the next few months.
