We have our first trade of the hot stove season, and wouldn’t you know it, Jerry Dipoto was involved. The Seattle Mariners acquired corner infielder Ryon Healy from the Oakland A’s on Wednesday.

Healy hit .271/.302/.451 with 25 home runs and 29 doubles in 149 games for Oakland in 2017, one of a whopping 74 players to hit at least 25 home runs last season.
“Ryon brings a power bat to our line-up at first base, while providing the flexibility to play third base,” said Dipoto, the Mariners general manager he has made 23 trades this calendar year. “He adds to a growing core of productive young players who impact our present and future.”
Seattle already has Kyle Seager locked up for $74.5 million over the next four years, so third base is accounted for. Healy’s playing time figures to come more at first base or maybe designated hitter. Mariners first basemen hit a collective .245/.308/.389 in 2017, last in the American League in slugging percentage and OPS (.697) and 14th out of 15 teams with 19 home runs from the position.
Healy, who turns 26 in January, started 38 games at first base, 31 games at third base and 77 times at designated hitter with Oakland in 2017.
In exchange for Healy, the A’s received right-handed pitcher Emilio Pagan and minor league infielder Alexander Campos. Pagan, 27 next May, posted a 3.22 ERA in 34 games in relief for Seattle in 2017, with 56 strikeouts and eight walks in 50⅓ innings.
Campos, who doesn’t turn 18 until February, is a Venezuelan shortstop who hit .290/.413/.367 in 59 games in the Dominican Summer League in 2017, and also saw time at third base and second base. He was rated the Mariners’ 15th-best prospect by MLB.com.
