Sports Illustrated called the Astros winning the World Series this season three years ago, even if they then changed their pick to the Dodgers at the beginning of this year (which ... hey, they were still close).
Jeff Van Gundy told Magic Johnson the 2017 World Series result way back in NBA Summer League
Johnson didn’t believe him, but Van Gundy got the last laugh.

But they weren’t the only ones to call a World Series matchup and the eventual winner, Jeff Van Gundy was on the Astros’ championship train this year as well, and he was spot on in his prediction.
Back at NBA Summer League in mid-July, Van Gundy was reportedly rubbing elbows with Magic Johnson, who is a minority owner of the Dodgers in addition to the work he is doing in the Lakers’ front office right now. And Van Gundy told Johnson exactly how he thought the World Series was going to pan out.
Now, it would be great if they did actually bet on it in private, instead of that just being a throwaway line from Johnson.
It’s no surprise that Van Gundy was in on the Astros (besides them being very good this year and looking like a World Series favorite for months before the postseason arrived) as he used to coach the Houston Rockets so has a rooting interest for the city.
So Johnson lost a friendly bet in addition to the Dodgers actually losing the World Series. That’s some real insult to injury.
