The 2017 Giants are so depressing they lost an award they (probably) created for themselves

Bummer.

The 2017 San Francisco Giants weren’t exactly a ball of laughs. For evidence towards that point, you can read pretty much any article over at McCovey Chronicles.

To add insult to the injury that was their season, they have now lost an award that (it appears) they made up so they could win a decade ago.

That would be the 2017 Green Glove Award, which isn’t a top-tier award and which many people probably don’t even realize exists. That’s fair, since it’s essentially an ego-boosting award about recycling based off of self-reported data and has only been won by two teams in the 10 years it has existed.

Seattle won this year, with the Mariners being credited for “diverting 96 percent of all waste at Safeco Field from landfill” for the season, and MLB’s senior director of ballpark operations & sustainability Paul Hanlon said of the win,

“We are thrilled to present the Seattle Mariners with the 2017 Green Glove Award. With their 96 percent conversion rate at the top of the list, the club has done a tremendous job of promoting and instilling sustainability practices and initiatives that will positively impact our environment. We look forward to supporting all 30 MLB clubs as they continue to move the needle when it comes to sustainability.”

I’m assuming he delivered that quote shortly after whispering to his assistant “what is this award again?” but we should all applaud sustainability however we can, since that will save our planet and all.

The Giants won this award for nine consecutive years, from the year it was created until this year when the Mariners stole their renewable-energy-thunder.

While there’s no concrete evidence that San Francisco actually made this participation award for themselves, after last year’s win a post on the team site about their sustainability efforts called it “the coveted MLB Green Glove Award” which is exactly what you would say if you were on your ninth straight year of trying to make fetch happen.

What’s even better about the Giants losing their own award (again, I assume) is that the Mariners achieved this vaunted win from none other than Entourage star Adrian Grenier and his Lonely Whale Foundation. What’s even funnier than the Giants getting bested at their own game by a Drive Me Crazy co-star is that MLB then spelled his name wrong in the release.

This entire situation is hilarious, and far better than if this award were legit in any way. Let’s all clap for environmental consciousness and sustainability, but also laugh at the Giants for somehow losing out on a trophy that only they seem to care about.
