The New York Yankees wanted a different voice to lead their team, and now they have it. Per multiple reports, first-time manager Aaron Boone has earned the top job in the Bronx, beating out a group of six candidates known to have interviewed for the job.
Bill Madden of the New York Daily News was the first to report the hire.
Boone has been a television broadcaster with ESPN for the last eight seasons, after playing 12 years in the majors with the Cincinnati Reds, Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals and Houston Astros.
Boone’s most memorable moment as a player came in 2003 with New York, hitting a walk-off home run against the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS to send the Yankees to the World Series.
Others to interview for the Yankees managerial position included San Francisco Giants bench coach Hensley Muelens, longtime Yankees coach Rob Thompson, newly retired former All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltran, former Seattle Mariners and Indians manager Eric Wedge, and Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward.
“Everybody has their strengths, everybody, obviously, has weaknesses. There’s no perfect candidate,” Cashman told the Associated Press on Friday. “We’re looking for someone that — you know, like we had before — someone that we can work with and collaborate with and connect with and in good times and in bad. And we’ve had that the last two managers I’ve worked with in Joe Torre and Joe Girardi, and we’re looking forward to having that again with a new one as we move forward.”
Boone replaces Girardi, who managed the Yankees for the last 10 seasons.
Thompson, who is reportedly close to joining the Philadelphia Phillies’ coaching staff, talked to Joel Sherman of the New York Post about getting passed over for the Yankees’ managerial gig.
“No hard feelings on my part! It’s the business,” Thompson told Sherman. “The Steinbrenners and the Yankee organization have taken great care of me for 28 years!!!! I’ve been a lucky man!!!!”
Beltran, who won a World Series with the Astros and then retired after the 2017 season, played with the Yankees from 2014-16.
“The manager opportunity is something that I would love to do at some point and never thought that opportunity would come that fast,” Beltran told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. “With that said, I’m looking forward to spending time with my wife and kids and enjoy my first summer vacation in more than 23 years.”
