The Giants and Cardinals submitted the framework of trades to the Marlins, which the Marlins approved. Now, all that’s left is for Giancarlo Stanton to approve or reject the teams pursuing him. The Giants expect to know by the end of this week if Stanton is bringing his homers from Miami to San Francisco, according to Alex Pavlovic, though, that timeline could of course change.

For instance, if the Dodgers were to be more aggressive in their pursuit of Stanton, then the slugger might not want to commit to the Giants or Cardinals one way or another, since Los Angeles is his childhood home and seemingly his preference. If the Dodgers continue to show that they prefer a chance to stay under the luxury tax and reset their penalties to giving up prospects to get Stanton, however, then the Marlins’ outfielder has more reason to make a decision within the next couple of days.

San Francisco is apparently more concerned about the Dodgers than the Cardinals, which maybe isn’t a shock. The Cardinals are talking to the Marlins about Stanton and made an offer, but it also seems as if they’re happy to instead talk about Christian Yelich or Marcell Ozuna should the Marlins make them available in a trade after Stanton is dealt elsewhere. Within that link is also a note from Derrick Goold that the Cards might be the team to take Evan Longoria away from the Rays, should the rumors about Tampa Bay looking to cut payroll be true. The short of it is that St. Louis has options.
With Shohei Ohtani finished with his seven meetings and a Stanton decision seemingly imminent, the offseason can finally get going, just in time for the winter meetings. Almost everything going down in the free agent and trade markets to this point has been in service of setting up a team for acquiring Ohtani, and we’re not going to see any major hitters sign until after the Stanton dust has settled. That could be happening really soon, though, if the Giants’ timeline has any truth to it.
- Stanton might not accept a trade to the Giants or Cardinals, and the Dodgers might not give him the opportunity to bail for Los Angeles. Not for 2018, anyway, which means we might be waiting for a Stanton trade for another year. And if so, good for Giancarlo, who would be using the power of the no-trade clause he negotiated.
