The New York Yankees and Houston Astros are playing a doubleheader on Sunday at Yankee Stadium, but the main event in New York on this day is the Derek Jeter jersey retirement ceremony, to be held between games.

When is the retirement ceremony?

Since there is an actual game played before, there is always the possibility that things could be delayed. But the plan is for Derek Jeter Night to start at 6:35 p.m. ET, with the second game of the doubleheader starting no earlier than 7:35 p.m.

How can I watch Jeter’s number getting retired?

ESPN will televise the ceremony as part of Baseball Tonight, the hour-long pregame show before its Sunday Night Baseball broadcast of the second game. Throughout the hour, ESPN will show segments of an interview Jeter did with host Karl Ravech.

Online streaming of the ceremony, as well as the nightcap between the Yankees and Astros, can be seen through WatchESPN.

How many Yankees have had their number retired?

A whopping 22 different Yankees have had their number retired, more than any other team in baseball. That includes No. 8 retired to honor two different Hall of Fame Yankees catchers — Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra.

Before Jeter, the last such retirement ceremony at Yankee Stadium was in 2015, when Jeter’s longtime teammates Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte, and Jorge Posada all had their numbers retired and a place secured in Monument Park just beyond center field.

Jeter’s No. 2 is the last single-digit Yankees uniform number other than zero to be retired, joining Billy Martin (No. 1), Babe Ruth (No. 3), Lou Gehrig (No. 4), Joe DiMaggio (No. 5), Joe Torre (No. 6), Mickey Mantle (No. 7), Berra and Dickey (No. 8), and Roger Maris (No. 9). That is some murderer’s row, and it doesn’t even cover half of the Yankees’ total retired numbers!

What Yankees records does Jeter hold?

Jeter played 20 seasons at shortstop for the Bronx Bombers, played in seven World Series and won five. He is the Yankees’ franchise leader in several categories, including hits (3,465), doubles (544), stolen bases (358), and games played (2,747). Jeter ranks second in runs scored (1,923), behind only Ruth (1,959) and ranks third in All-Star Games (14) behind Mantle (20) and Berra (18).

Quotable

“Throughout 20 years in pinstripes, I learned that despite the pace and the pressure, one code truly makes this city go: Get up each day, put on your uniform, go to work, do your best, and don’t make excuses,” Jeter wrote this week at The Players’ Tribune. “That’s all New York ever really asks for. And that’s what I tried to do.”
