FSU showed off how many errors it could pull off in one play

FSU can’t stop committing errors in Omaha.

LSU and Florida State continue to impress in the College World Series with the most white-knuckle baseball one can imagine. We’ve already witnessed dugout sit-ups in celebration of the Tigers’ first run, and here in the top of the sixth, things are very much getting weird yet again.

LSU carried a 5-1 lead into the top of the frame, when third baseman Josh Smith slipped a weak grounder to first, where all hell broke loose.

The Seminoles’ first baseman Drew Mendoza fielded the ball clean, then underhanded it over to pitcher Andrew Karp, who couldn’t make the catch. Then, catcher Cal Raleigh slinged the ball over to Mendoza, who couldn’t help but collide with Smith, who sort of half-slid back to the bag. Never have four baseball players looked more confused about what is happening around them.

Only Mendoza earned a throwing error on the play, which is actually remarkable.

All told, two players ended up on their asses on this play, with Mendoza’s fall-then-roll bewilderment taking the trophy for most awkward gymnastics of the entire sequence.

Anyway, Florida State plated a run in the bottom of the frame, and LSU continues to hold a commanding lead over the Noles, 5-2.
