Championship series begins Monday night

LSU’s pitching proved too tough, beating Oregon State 6-1 on Saturday, with Caleb Gilbert taking a shutout into the eighth inning before turning things over to Tigers closer extraordinaire Zach Hess for the final five outs.
Catcher Michael Paperski homered twice and drove in four for LSU in the win, and designated hitter Beau Jordan added two hits plus a home run of his own.
It was a tough elimination for Oregon State, who won 23 straight games before Friday’s 3-1 loss to LSU, which forced Saturday’s elimination game.
LSU beginning Monday night will try for its seventh championship, and its first since 2009.
In the nightcap, Florida right-hander Alex Faedo was too much for TCU, striking out 11 in the Gators’ 3-0 win. Faedo pitched scoreless ball into the eighth for the win.
Florida designated hitter Christian Hicks was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI in the win.
