Phillies trade Howie Kendrick to Nationals

Washington is sending a low-level minor leaguer to Philadelphia in return.

The Phillies are trading second baseman Howie Kendrick to the Nationals, FOX’s Ken Rosenthal reports. In return, the Nationals are sending minor league left-handed pitcher McKenzie Mills back, as well as international bonus pool space.

Kendrick is due a shade approximately $3.5 million over the rest of the season. Philadelphia is sending cash to Washington in the deal that would knock that salary down to a pro-rated league minimum, making it more appetizing for the Nationals.

The veteran second baseman, who has also played some left field in recent months, joined Philadelphia this season and is batting .340 with an OPS of .851 and an OPS+ of 125, all above his marks in previous seasons with the Dodgers and Angels.

Mills was pitching for the Nationals’ A-ball affiliate the Hagerstown Suns until this week when he was promoted to the Potomac Nationals. He has a 3.01 ERA in 18 starts.

Kendrick is a free agent after this season, and after this trade it’s likely that the Nationals will be all but done making moves in advance of the deadline.
