The Mets are acquiring closer AJ Ramos from the Marlins

The Mets are selling right now, but Ramos could help New York contend in 2018.

The Mets are set to acquire Marlins closer AJ Ramos, according to reports from FOX’s Ken Rosenthal.

This transaction may seem strange at first blush seeing as the Mets have been shopping anybody and everybody that makes sense before the deadline. They already traded Lucas Duda to the Rays, and showed no signs of stopping their selling.

However, that may still be the case as Ramos is under team control through 2018 as he is arbitration eligible after this year. Despite them being very not good this year, New York is very much hoping to contend next season. Ramos could definitely help them do that.

The closer is 30-years old this season, with 20 saves and a 3.63 ERA in 39.2 innings pitched. He also has a 1.311 WHIP this season, a shade over his career average but respectable and worthwhile for where the Mets are nonetheless.

With current closer Addison Reed more than likely heading out of town before the deadline, Ramos can slot in for him for the time being while the team waits for Jeurys Familia to return from the 60-day DL, due to an arterial clot in his shoulder.

The Mets are sending minor leaguers Merandy Gonzalez and Ricardo Cespedes to Florida in the deal.

Right-handed pitcher Gonzalez is the Mets’ ninth-ranked prospect, while outfielder Cespedes is their 22nd-ranked talent on the farm. Both are spending time in A-ball right now.
