Rich Hill got hit in the throat by a pitch and somehow stayed in the game

This could have been much, much worse.

In what could have been a much worse moment during Friday’s Dodgers-Padres game, Los Angeles pitcher Rich Hill got hit in the neck by a 91-mile per hour pitch while trying to lay a bunt down.

After falling to the ground near home plate holding his neck, while the entire stadium was on the edge its seat hoping he was okay, Hill was able to recover and take his base. Which seems especially miraculous when you watch the gif above and see just how much pain Hill was in while laying in the dirt.

The entire situation could have been far scarier and Hill is lucky he walked away, nonetheless he was fine enough to come back and pitch a scoreless fifth inning afterwards.

It seems as if his reaction to spin away (like any warm-blooded creature would do just off of instinct) saved him from a worse outcome here.

It already left a significant red mark on his neck, and if that’s the only aftermath he’ll be dealing with in the morning that’s a definite win here.
