If the Kansas City Royals had stayed scoreless on Tuesday night for the first six innings of their game against the Rays, they would have broken the league record for most consecutive innings kept scoreless.
The Royals were so close to the scoreless streak record, they should’ve just broken it
You know, for fun.

They set a new franchise record with 43 on Monday, and were only five back of the scoreless streaks held by the 1906 Phillies and the 1968 Cubs.
Fortunately, they scored in the third inning against the Rays, and broke their rough streak before it could go in the record books.
What if they didn’t, though?
After coming so close, even though it’s an ignominious record, they should have just broken it.
Sure, it’s not a positive goal and there would have been many (more) jokes going around about their plight. They’re also still in the wild card race and want to win games, of course, but since they only needed six innings scoreless there’s also a chance they could have just scored at some point in innings seven through nine and pulled out a win.
Would that have really been so bad? It’s August, and even though Giancarlo Stanton is offering plenty of headlines with his home runs and feel-good record setting, it would have been sort of great for the Royals to provide some hilarious headlines celebrating a very unfortunate record.
The fan base might not have appreciated the team being put in such company, but everybody else probably would have gotten a kick out of it. Sometimes that should be enough to be a little pitiful.
If the chance comes up again, the Royals should just lean into their poor luck and worse offense and go ahead and break it. For fun!
