Nick Markakis hits his 2,000th career hit against the Dodgers

He is the 10th active player to reach that mark.

With a relatively innocuous opposite field single during the fourth inning of Thursday’s Braves game, Nick Markakis hit his 2,000th career hit. Because he’s Nick Markakis, it’s only right that such an achievement would come on a single.

He is only the 10th active player to reach that threshold, joining Ichiro Suzuki, Adrian Beltre (who of course just hit 3,000 this week), Albert Pujols, Carlos Beltran, Miguel Cabrera, Robinson Cano, Matt Holliday, Jose Reyes, and Victor Martinez.

The jokes about Markakis getting a single to reach 2,000 were flying after it happened, and his career lives up to that reputation. In 1,785 games he has 1,404 singles, 416 doubles, only 18 triples, and 162 home runs.

He also got a standing ovation from the Atlanta crowd, an organization he only joined in 2015 after starting his career with nine seasons in Baltimore.

While 2,000 might not be as knock-down impressive as 3,000, it’s still an accomplishment for anyone. Only 285 people in the history of the league have done it, and now Markakis is one of those few.

May there be many more base hits to come.
