Hurricane Harvey has impacted Houston and Texas in ways many probably haven’t even considered. Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer and his wife, Erica, however, are thinking of the little guy with their support of Harvey’s victims. Like, the real little guys — meaning pets.
Max Scherzer is covering adoption fees to help pets stranded by Hurricane Harvey
Scherzer and his wife, Erica, are on the Humane Rescue Alliance board, and they’re doing what they can to help Houston’s pets.

You see, the Scherzers are on the Humane Rescue Alliance board in Washington D.C., and that rescue already has 100 pets and is expecting to take in another 20 from Houston that have been displaced by Hurricane Harvey. In order to make sure there is room available at the HRA, the Scherzers are going to pay the adoption fees for pets from Thursday through Sunday.
“Adoption fees range from $85 up to about $200 depending on the animal and the age of the animal,” said Shain. “But Erica and Max have pledged because they know how important it is we get these kennels empty and they are going to cover those adoption fees.”
This is heartwarming: Let me tell you how sad the process of selecting a photo to show up on our homepage and on Twitter and such was for me. It was a little easier to do knowing that people like the Scherzers are trying to make life better for these displaced pets, which have no way of helping themselves other than through the kindness of people capable of taking care of them. The Scherzers are in a position to do so and are putting their money toward a great, easily overlooked (not out of malice, but because an entire city and its people are drowning) cause during a horrific time for the city of Houston and all of its inhabits.
If you’re in the D.C. area and you have been thinking about getting a pet, just know that you might be saving the lives of two pets in the process. Now is a wonderful time to adopt, if you’re able. It’s on Max and Erica, after all.
