J.D. Martinez hits 4 home runs in 1 game for the 1st time in Diamondbacks history

He’s the second person to do it this year.

J.D. Martinez, traded to Arizona before the non-waiver trade deadline in July, became the first Diamondbacks player ever to hit four home runs in the same game.

He’s the second person to do it this year after Scooter Gennett did it back in early June. That’s only the second time that’s happened even: back in 2002, Mike Cameron and Shawn Green accomplished the feat only a few weeks apart.

It’s only the 18th time in MLB history that a player has ever hit four homers in a single game, so Martinez is in rare company when it comes to occurrences all-time. He’s also the first person to hit each home run off of a different pitcher since 1954. Maximum emotional damage to the other team is what that is.

That this comes against the Dodgers, who also could have traded for Martinez, is extra salt in the wound for Los Angeles. The Diamondbacks won the game, 13-0, with Martinez accounting for six of those runs himself.

He went four for five with a strikeout, the only mar on what was otherwise a magnificent night for Martinez.

With so many other teams able to trade for him back at the deadline, there are presumably a lot of front offices disappointed in themselves at this point (especially considering how good the entire second half of his year has been with Arizona).

The Diamondbacks have won 11 straight games. Even though they won’t pass the Dodgers for the division lead at this point, they have a 6.5-game lead over Colorado for the first Wild Card spot and look headed for the postseason.

How much Martinez magic will they get then?
