Yu Darvish has a mystery offer from the Brewers

Monday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at Yu Darvish, who is still a free agent for some reason.

Yu Darvish reportedly has a contract offer from the Brewers, but no one knows a thing about it. Sponichi Annex had the initial report, with Ken Rosenthal confirming that Milwaukee has submitted a formal offer to the free agent starter.

It’s a mystery offer in part because no one has reported any potential years or dollars in the contract — Google translate on the original article seems to be saying it could be a five or six year deal, but that seems more like guesswork than reporting with said translation — and also because the Brewers might very well be the mystery team Darvish referred to earlier this offseason on Twitter when discussing his suitors. It’s also a mystery if Darvish is going to accept any offer he has in his hands right now: the last reported offer with dollars attached didn’t even crack $90 million over five years.

It’s also unclear if Darvish is the free agent Jeff Passan reported is willing to sit out until midseason in order to get the deal they believe they deserve — if he is, one wonders if this is the Brewers jumping in to take advantage of a market that drove Darvish to that point, or if, like everyone else this winter, they’re just taking their time hoping the prices fall.

Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. Darvish had a down 2017, sure, but he still managed a 118 ERA+ over 31 starts, and he’s also clearly one of the top free agent pitchers on the market — if not the top free agent pitcher. And, despite tipping his pitches both in-season and in the postseason, the team that benefited the most from that, the Astros, still showed interest in acquiring him: It’s a fixable problem, there just wasn’t very much time to fix it in late October.

While the Astros are likely out of the running after acquiring Gerrit Cole, that still leaves the Rangers as a possibility despite some insistence otherwise, the Twins if they ever clear their busy schedule, the Yankees if they can clear payroll to stay under the luxury tax threshold, and the Cubs in addition to the Brewers.

  • Polygon has the story on MLB’s in-house development of R.B.I. Baseball 18, which serves to explain the game while also detailing the history of licensed baseball games.
  • As referenced earlier, the Rangers’ interest in Darvish seems to be downplayed constantly, but depending on who you ask, they’re one of the favorites.
  • Whether the Yankees end up with Darvish or not, Pinstripe Alley believes their rotation is a strength.
