Breaking down the video of Boston bros catching a foul ball at Fenway

They may or may not have been drinking a decent amount alcoholic beverages before this happened.

During Red Sox-Yankees ALDS Game 1 on Friday night at Fenway, a group of Boston fans caught a Jackie Bradley, Jr. foul ball in the upper deck in left field. It was barely foul, and Bradley popped out shortly after. What we’re here for is the people catching the foul ball, and what happened when they did. Because it was so, so Boston.

If you weren’t watching the game, here’s a clip.

There’s a decent amount happening here so let’s break down the best moments from this brief clip of Boston fans

The jerseys

There are multiple Sox jerseys in view here. All of them are various levels of Boston, but together they form a picture of all levels of upper deck Boston fans. There’s an Eckersley jersey that looks pretty new, there’s a Betts jersey to cover the team on the field right now, and there’s a guy in a Pedroia jersey off to the side cheering which covers the “injured fan favorite and team leader” base.

We can’t forget the guy off to the right who is wearing a Red Sox jersey over a button up, with the jersey undone halfway to his waste. Or his friend with a hoodie on underneath his jersey. Priceless. Truly a comprehensive Boston fan glossary in this corner of seats.

It’s not a shocker there are fans wearing Red Sox jersey at a Red Sox game. But it offers a nice foundation of This Is About To Be So Boston before what happens next.

Their reaction

Low fives all around, dudes!

Those low fives lead to an intense bro hug.

The bro hug lead to a committed, theatrical beer chug. A full lean over at the waist to pick the beer up off the ground all the way into a full back arch to finish the cup. During which more bro hugging is occurring adjacent to the chugging. Everyone’s involved, some real teamwork happening in this celebration.

I score it a 9.7.

That one guy’s hat

It’s a small detail. Especially when you take everything else happening in this video into account. But the bro who caught the ball was not only wearing the Official New England October Uniform of a flannel shirt, jeans, and a Sox hat but the hat was a patterned Sox hat. Specifically, a Hawaiian flower Sox hat. Just needed to point that out.

....When this happened

This is when things peaked. Clearly. Just when you thought that we’d been on these guys for long enough, that the camera was going to cut back to game action, something in the cameraperson spoke to them and said “No, not yet. Stay on this group for a moment longer. Good things will happen.” They were rewarded.

Because just then the dude (because he very much is a dude) who caught the ball put it in his mouth and shook from side to side. Nobody near him tried to stop him, they all just laughed.

Hope they remember this awesome moment in the morning, if not they have a detailed TV clip to remind them of how it all went down.
