The Indians and Astros are facing off in Game 3 of the ALDS with Houston up two games to zilch on Cleveland, so it’s potentially the Indians’ last game of 2018. They wore their navy home uniforms with the Chief Wahoo logo on their sleeves and hats. Next season, Cleveland is ditching their racist Chief Wahoo logo on uniforms. Not on merchandise though, because actually losing money is a bridge too far when it comes to getting rid of racist representations of Native Americans.
Cleveland wore the Chief Wahoo logo on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, sigh
At least this could be the last time we see Wahoo on Cleveland’s uniforms.

So if Cleveland loses on Monday, it would be the last time you’d see Chief Wahoo on their uniforms ever, hopefully. Monday also happens to be Columbus Day. It is also Indigenous Peoples’ Day in many states, a holiday that celebrates the shared history and culture of the indigenous people throughout America who were definitely here before Columbus and didn’t do all the .... super racist and horrible stuff that Columbus did.
Here’s a picture of a Cleveland player wearing the Chief Wahoo logo on Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Here’s another picture of a Cleveland player wearing the Chief Wahoo logo on Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Here, again, is a picture of a Cleveland player wearing the Chief Wahoo logo on Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Wait wait, one more. Because they were all wearing the logo, remember. On Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
For some teams the starting pitcher on that day gets to choose which alternate uniform or logo combination the team wears, and Cleveland appears to take part in this practice. So starter Mike Clevinger may have been the one to make this decision rather than the front office or Terry Francona or whatnot.
Which, if that’s the case, maybe someone in the organization (literally anyone!) could have tapped him on the shoulder after he said he wanted to wear this uniform and lightly suggested that not happen. That the logo still exists in 2018 is bad enough (and no, I’m not giving Cleveland credit for getting rid of it this late since they’re only even doing that so they could host the All-Star Game next year) but guys, read the room. Even just a little. You could have said goodbye to your racist logo on a different day.
