Earlier this week, MLB announced that all 30 teams would wear hats honoring the victims of last week’s school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Florida, and the players could also elect to wear the hats during games as well as during the collective honoring before their games.
Marlins welcome Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball and softball teams to Spring Training
All 30 teams honored victims of last week’s school shooting during Friday’s Spring Training games.

The idea started on a few of the Grapefruit League teams and spread until all the teams wanted to do it across the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues, leading Commissioner Manfred to approve the in-game use of the hats. After the games, players will be signing hats and auctioning them off to support the Broward Education Foundation, which will in turn benefit the Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund. 17 people were killed in the shooting, many of the victims students.
Many, if not all, of the players in action on Friday wore the hats, including Anthony Rizzo who graduated from Stoneman Douglas and returned to his former high school after the shooting to speak at a prayer vigil.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball and softball teams attended the Marlins’ Spring Training game against the Cardinals as well, meeting with players and Derek Jeter before the game.
A lovely gesture from the Marlins, and the rest of baseball, as Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the community works to heal after this tragedy.
