MLB’s ‘Game of Thrones’-themed Baseball Is Coming promo will mesmerize you

HBO and baseball are teaming up once again.

Once again, MLB and HBO are teaming up for Game of Thrones promotions throughout the baseball season. This isn’t really news, as over the last few years teams have shown they are more than OK with jumping all the way on the cross-promotion train. Turns out, baseball players love one of the most obsessed-over pop culture phenomenons in the world.

This year, there will once again be GoT-themed games with “giveaways, ticket specials, and experiences”. If I were a betting person I’d say there are probably going to be the same goofy crossover bobbleheads and dorky manager post-game participation situations where somebody shoehorns a reference to the show into their game breakdown or sits in a throne in front of media or something.

But again, that’s not really news and not why we’re here. Those type of sponsored events never seem as cool as they’re meant to, and other than getting to see baseball players be complete dorks (more than usual, of course) and maybe dress up if they love the show there’s not much spontaneous joy to come from the endeavor.

We’re here because to announce the renewed partnership, MLB released a “Baseball Is Coming” promo video in the style of the Thrones opening credits. It features a ballpark coming together the same way King’s Landing or Winterfell do before the blood starts spilling on Sunday night. It’s a genuinely cool video and completely mesmerizing to watch the mound, seats, and other ballpark details click into place.

It’s exceedingly rare for baseball to try to do something cool and actually pull it off in a effortless way. Sure, this is the brainchild of two multi-billion dollar companies that are only doing this to convince you to spend more money on both of their products. So it’s hard to be too over the moon about the creativity. But it’s neat!

Baseball doing something truly neat doesn’t happen often. It’s almost unsettling, like your dad suddenly making a Kacey Musgraves reference when he’s been convinced the Plain White T’s are still cool for years now. Good for baseball. They won’t do anything nearly this casually cool for another 18 months or so, so let’s appreciate this.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to watch this video as many more times as possible before MLB’s video site breaks again.
