Tigers’ backup catcher John Hicks hit a perfect walkoff safety squeeze bunt in the 12th inning to beat the Rays yes really oh just watch the video if you want proof

Tough luck for the Rays.

The Tigers and Rays were tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 12th inning on Wednesday afternoon, just enjoying the sunshine and staying outside for as long as they could before the streetlights came on and all of their moms called them in for dinner.

With no outs and a man on third, Tigers’ backup catcher John Hicks decided he wanted to get home a little early because everyone knows his mom makes the absolute best mac and cheese on the block and if you don’t get there early for servings you won’t get your fair share. It goes fast!

So Hicks took things into his own hands and bunted Detroit to victory. A perfectly placed, completely unexpected, safety squeeze down the first base line to bring home the run and walk it off. A real “let’s just do it and be legends, man” moment except in this situation that worked out.

The bunt was unexpected but the celebration was not — everyone went wild over Hicks’ bunt and he got the full “chase him around and spray gatorade on him as you dance on the field” celebration.

The Rays’ tried to field the bunt but you can fully see their acknowledgement that they have already failed by the time they even get to the ball. There’s a full dive involved, too little too late, and Matt Andriese almost gets taken out.

The only thing worse than losing in the bottom of the 12th inning because of a walkoff bunt is losing in the bottom of the 12th inning because of a walkoff bunt and also injuring your reliever in the process. So things could have been worse for the Rays.

Hicks really picked his spot and went for it though, and the Tigers have all night to celebrate by eating macaroni and cheese and watching scary movies in the finished basement.
