The 2018 MLB Draft starts Monday night, with the first two rounds highlighting the opener of the three-day event.
MLB Draft order 2018: Full 1st round order and beyond
1,212 total picks will be made over three days from June 4-6.

In addition to the first round there are compensation picks on Monday, some for free agent signings and one a failed first-round signing in 2017. Monday will also include the second round plus Competitive Balance Rounds A and B, with 14 teams among the lowest revenue or in the smallest markets given extra picks before the third round.
The draft order is determined by the inverse order of the clubs’ 2017 records, with ties broken by the previous season’s record. For instance the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants were both 64-98 in 2017, but the Tigers got the top pick in 2018 because their 2016 record was worse than San Francisco.
Here is the order for the first round, which is the same for rounds 4-40 (some teams lost picks in the second and third rounds for signing free agents):

Tampa Bay got a compensatory pick just after the first round (No. 31 overall) for free agent pitcher Alex Cobb signing with the Baltimore Orioles, and also got another pick (No. 32) as compensation for failing to sign Oregon State right-hander Drew Rasmussen, their 2017 supplemental first-round pick. The Rays with those picks, plus their selection in the Competitive Balance Round B (No. 71), have six picks in the top 100 selections of the draft, more than any other team.
Following the first round are five compensation picks and eight picks in Competitive Balance Round A.

In between the second and third rounds are Competitive Balance Round B and more free agent compensation picks. Among these picks include a rarity. The Padres acquired the No. 74 overall pick from the Minnesota Twins as part of the Phil Hughes trade on May 27. The picks in the Competitive Balance rounds are the only ones allowed to be dealt, and even then each pick can only be traded once.

The third round has three more teams without picks after signing free agents — the Phillies (Jake Arrieta), Twins (Lance Lynn), and Milwaukee Brewers (Lorenzo Cain). In addition, the Atlanta Braves lost their third-round pick as a result of their widespread violations of international and domestic amateur signing rules.
