The 2018 MLB Draft begins Monday night, with the first and second rounds of baseball’s annual restocking of domestic amateur talent.
MLB Draft 2018: Time, TV schedule for Monday’s Round 1 and more
Two rounds and 78 total picks are on the docket for the first day.

MLB Network will televise the first round beginning at 7 p.m. ET, with a pre-show scheduled for 6 p.m. Following the first round is Competitive Balance Round A, with a select few of MLB’s lower-revenue and small-market teams getting extra picks. After that round, which takes us through the first 43 selections of the draft, coverage will shift to online exclusively, on MLB.com.
The first round features four minutes in between each pick, which allows for more time for television analysis. To that end, MLB Network’s coverage will feature Greg Amsinger hosting alongside analysts Peter Gammons, Dan O’Dowd, Harold Reynolds, and Jonathan Mayo.
The Detroit Tigers have the first overall pick, the first time for them since selecting pitcher Matt Anderson from Rice No. 1 overall in 1997. The San Francisco Giants, who, like the Tigers, lost 98 games last year, pick No. 2. The last time the Giants had a pick this high turned out pretty well for them, selecting Mississippi State first baseman Will Clark.
What a thrill.
In all the MLB Draft lasts three days with 1,212 total picks. But on Monday we will only see the first 78 selections. There is a one-minute interval between picks after the first round, through Round 10.
