Chris Wondolowski ties Roy Lassiter’s MLS goal-scoring record

Chris Wondolowski converted a penalty in the 27th minute to equal Roy Lassiter’s 16-year-old single-season goal-scoring record.

Chris Wondolowski tied Roy Lassiter's 16-year-old record for most goals scored in a single MLS season to give the San Jose Earthquakes a 1-0 lead over the Portland Timbers on Saturday. The record-tying goal came on a penalty, with Wondolowski sending a low shot to the left corner that got past goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, who guessed the right direction.

As of this writing, Wondolowski has about 55 minutes to break the record.

The hard work for the goal was done by Steven Lenhart, who drew the penalty. The big forward got behind the defense, then rounded Ricketts, who was forced to take him down from behind. Although it appeared that Ricketts got some of the ball, he put himself in a vulnerable position by letting Lenhart get behind him and definitely made contact.

Lassiter's record was set in the inaugural season of MLS. Two other players had come within one goal, but no one had even scored more than 20 since 2002 when Carlos Ruiz (24) and Taylor Twellman (23) each managed that.
