Brek Shea undergoes foot surgery, out 12-14 weeks

The FC Dallas midfielder will be recovering for all of the offseason and won’t be able to participate in the first games of the United States’ World Cup qualifying.

Brek Shea underwent surgery to remove a sesamoid bone -- meaning his bone had started to grow into his tendon -- in his right foot on Thursday. The recovery is expected to take 12-14 weeks, meaning he'll be out for the entirety of FC Dallas' offseason and be forced to miss at least the first few games of the United States' final stage of World Cup qualifying.

Shea, 22, is coming off a disappointing season in which he scored three goals and had two assists in 21 games. That was a year after a breakout season in which he scored 11 times, had four assists and was named a MLS MVP finalist. He also became a fixture on the USMNT, for whom he now has 15 caps. Most seem to think that his heavy schedule of a year ago caused his production to drop off dramatically toward the end of the year, something he never quite recovered from.

At his best, he’s a physical specimen quite unlike anyone else in the national team pool. He stands 6-foot-4 and is one of the team’s fastest players. He’s also displayed impressive touch and vision, at times.
