Second Phase of MLS Re-Entry Draft almost as notable for who didn’t get picked as who did

Danny Califf goes to Toronto FC and Conor Casey picked by Philadelphia Union, but players like Kevin Hartman and Juan Pablo Angel are skipped over.

The LA Galaxy made the boldest move of the day, sending a first-round pick in the upcoming Supplemental Draft to Chivas USA in order to swap spots with them and move up to the No. 2 spot in the second phase of the MLS Re-Entry Draft on Friday. They used that pick on former Houston Dynamo midfielder Colin Clark. On their second turn, the Galaxy bolstered their goalkeeping corps by picking Will Hesmer, late of the Columbus Crew.

Among the other notable players to be snapped up were forward Chad Barrett by the New England Revolution, forward Conor Casey by the Philadelphia Union, midfielder Eric Avila by the Colorado Rapids, defender Stephen Keel by FC Dallas and Paulo Jr. by the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Equally notable were some of the players who weren't selected. Among them were former Designated Players Julian de Guzman and Juan Pablo Angel, former Goalkeeper of the Year Kevin Hartman and Ramiro Corrales, the last player remaining for the league's inaugural season.

Teams are free to renegotiate contract terms with players they pick in this stage of the Re-Entry Draft. Players who aren’t taken are essentially free to look for new teams, although their old MLS teams still technically hold their rights and could be due compensation if they sign elsewhere.
