RSL start rebuilding, reportedly trade Fabian Espindola, Jamison Olave and Will Johnson

Real Salt Lake will receive about $500,000 in allocation and free up about $1 million in salary after sending Jamison Olave and Fabian Espindola to New York and Will Johnson to the Timbers, according to Soccer by Ives.

Real Salt Lake is wasting no time in getting involved in the MLS offseason, as they will trade away Jamison Olave, Fabian Espindola and Will Johnson once MLS lifts the roster freeze on Monday, according to Soccer by Ives. The two trades will supposedly net RSL about $500,000 in allocation and free up about $1 million in salary cap room.

Olave and Espindola will be sent to the New York Red Bulls and Will Johnson will be heading to the Portland Timbers, with significant amounts of allocation money coming back to RSL in both deals.

Ives is also reporting that this is only the beginning of RSL’s roster changes. RSL had been giving strong indications that they were going to have to break up the core of their team that has remained mostly intact since head coach Jason Kreis and GM Garth Lagerwey started building it in ernest in 2008. These moves would be a crystal clear indication that they will make good on those promises.

Both Red Bulls have started a house cleaning of their own, cutting ties with at least 10 players already. Among those rumored cuts are both of their starting center backs, Markus Holgersson and Wilman Conde. They have yet to hire a new head coach, though, as they search for Hans Backe’s replacement.

The Timbers will also likely undergoing some significant changes, as they prepare to officially start the Caleb Porter era. Johnson, a Canadian international, has mostly been a wide midfielder in RSL’s diamond.
