Omar Cummings traded to Dynamo from Rapids for Nathan Sturgis, Allocation Money

Reigning Eastern Conference champions strengthen attack by acquiring Jamaican international.

The Eastern Conference just got even tougher with the Houston Dynamo acquiring Jamaican international Omar Cummings via trade from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for defender Nathan Sturgis and allocation money on Sunday. Although Cummings has battled injury in each of the past two seasons, the 30-year-old has been among the more explosive players in MLS during most of his six-year career.

"I have always like Omar," Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said in a team release. "He is a good player with good pace. He is someone who knows the league well. We were in an unfortunate situation with Calen Carr's injury, but Omar is a player who can come in and help us stretch the field."

Carr tore his ACL in the MLS Cup final, which the Dynamo eventually lost to the LA Galaxy, and is considered to be out indefinitely. Cummings casts a similar profile, albeit with a considerably stronger resume. Cummings has 39 goals and 27 assists in his MLS career and is only two years removed from his 14-goal, three-assist performance in 2010.

To acquire Cummings, the Dynamo gave up Sturgis and what is believed to be a significant amount of allocation money. Sturgis, who is still just 25 and was once considered a promising prospect, will be joining his sixth team in his eight-year MLS career. This will also be his fourth team in as many years. Sturgis never quite found a place in the Dynamo’s rotation, playing just 332 minutes.
