Josh Gardner didn't play much for the Montreal Impact in 2012, but Sporting Kansas City was still willing to swap a second-round pick in the 2013 SuperDraft in order to keep him out of the Re-Entry Draft. The Impact had declined his option, making him eligible for the Re-Entry Draft. Immediately upon acquiring him, Sporting KC exercised that option.

Sporting KC pick up seldom-used, but versatile defender Josh Gardner in exchange for SuperDraft pick.

“I’m very excited to come to Kansas City. Sporting KC is an organization where the ownership group and coaching staff have done great things,” Gardner said in a Sporting KC release. “They have accomplished a lot and I look forward to playing in the best stadium and in front of all the passionate fans.”
Gardner only played in six matches and started only five times for the Impact in 2012, but a year earlier he made 21 starts for the Columbus Crew. In 2011, he also scored a career high two goals and had two assists.
