New England Revolution acquire No. 1 pick in MLS SuperDraft from Toronto FC

The Revolution will select first in Thursdays draft after a trade with TFC.

Jared Wickerham

The New England Revolution have acquired the No. 1 pick in the Thursday's MLS SuperDraft from Toronto FC in exchange for the fourth overall pick and allocation money. New England is now in position to draft Andrew Farrell if they would like, a defender who most believe is the best player in the draft.

With the trade, New England now have their highest draft pick in club history. After a dreadful season, and with a roster that could certainly use work, the Revolution are in a very important offseason for the club. They need to add talent, and this is a big move to do so.

The versatility of Farrell may intrigue the Revolution, especially since they could use help across the back line. But while many believe Farrell is the best player in the draft, it is not a consensus and it is not by a large margin so Farrell to New England is hardly a lock. Many believe Chivas is eying Carlos Alvarez at No. 2, so the Revs could have traded up to select him, or any number of other players like Walker Zimmerman, Eriq Zavaleta or Kyle Bekker, but Farrell does remain the most likely choice.

Toronto already had two high picks in the draft, No. 1 and No. 3. Now they still have that, albeit a little lower, but they will pick consecutively at third and fourth and have some extra allocation money to boot.

New England, you are now on the clock.
