2013 MLS schedule released: ‘Rivalry Week’ is newest wrinkle

Defying the skeptics, MLS manages to put out its schedule about 10 minutes before their self-announced deadline of noon

Otto Greule Jr

MLS released its full 2013 schedule of 323 matches on Tuesday, announcing that all of the games will be broadcast live either on TV or online. Of those, 87 will be available on national TV through a combination of ESPN, NBC and Univision networks. D.C. United is the only team scheduled to have two of its games broadcast on the main NBC network.

The newest wrinkle in this year's schedule will be something being dubbed "rivalry week." The weekend of March 16 will feature 8 of 9 matches featuring regional rivals, with three of them being broadcast on NBC channels. Among them are Seattle Sounders-Portland Timbers (NBCSN), New York Red Bulls-D.C. United (NBC) and Sporting Kansas City-Chicago Fire (NBCSN).

Similar to last year, each of the 19 teams will play three games against most conference opponents and one game against out-of-conference opponents. The exception is in the East, where each team will play one other team only twice.

The regular season will conclude on Oct. 27 with five matches and be followed by the playoffs. The MLS Cup is scheduled for Dec. 7 or 8.
