The idea of soccer shirts being as much about style as function is hardly a new one. It’s probably the only sport in the world where virtually every team releases at least one new kit a season. The explosion of third kits has only fueled this phenomena.
Sporting KC clearly targeting hipster crowd with new argyle third kit
The pattern clearly suggests this is a shirt that designers hope will be worn around town.

But even in this context, few shirts have ever been quite so overtly designed to be worn around town as the new Sporting Kansas third kits have. The simple black color and bold argyle stripe across the belly scream to be paired with a pair of jeans and, in fact, that’s what the actual press release even suggests.
Amping up the style statement, these are also the first MLS kits that are apparently available for goalkeepers as well. No word if the goalkeeper kit will be available for purchase, but Jimmy Nielsen was definitely wearing one in the shirts’ debut on Saturday.
Fittingly, the debut came against the Portland Timbers, who up until now had been the fashion leaders in MLS. This kit clearly puts Sporting KC at the top of the pecking order.
