It sounds like Junior Dos Santos won’t be taking any pages out of the Rashad Evans guide to staying inactive during the prime of your career. It seems that rather than wait for UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez to recover from a torn rotator cuff, Dos Santos’ manager has stated that the No. 1 contender will remain active through 2011.
Soares On Dos Santos: ‘He Is Not Going To Wait Six Months’
Dos Santos hasn’t fought since a one-sided handling of Roy Nelson at UFC 117 in Oakland, so waiting for Velasquez would put him out of competition for at least a year; too long for someone trying to stay in the hunt for the title. With the UFC’s heavyweight division going through some exceedingly tumultuous times at the moment, this may be a great opportunity for ‘Cigano’ to finally take the reigns.
With a possible fight between Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar already in the works, Roy Nelson’s contract issues and Shane Carwin recently undergoing back surgery, there aren’t too many options that would make sense for JDS. Brendan Schaub looks locked into a fight with Mirco Cro Cop and Rodrigo Nogueira says a fight with Dos Santos would never happen. It’s going to be tough to find a matchup that suits the needs of all parties involved.
Fedor, anyone?
