Cain Velasquez Undergoes Successful Surgery

The procedure to repair Cain Velasquez's torn rotator cuff has apparently gone off without a hitch. Good news for Cain, great news for the UFC. Velasquez suffered the injury during his title fight for the UFC Heavyweight Championship with Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 in October.

Velasquez broke the new via his official Twitter page that he had already resumed his training.

“Surgery went well. Back at Joe Grasso’s lifting legs. Best place to train.”

Great to see Velasquez getting back into it so soon after having a major operation. That mindset may be his saving grace when he steps back into the octagon after a lengthy layoff. Estimates are all over the place, but the prevailing theory is that Velasquez will be out for nearly a year before he would be able to defend his title. Depending on how the No. 1 contender match between former champ Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos shakes out, Velasquez may not fight again until October of this year. Ring rust will almost certainly come into play due to his lack of experience. With only nine MMA fights underneath him, Cain is one of the least seasoned fighters in the UFC. He may be one of the best, but no amount of training can make up for time spent in the octagon.
