With another win for Nick Diaz under the Strikeforce banner comes the inevitable talk of who the San Jose based promotion will scramble to find for him to fight next. While undefeated rising star Tyron Woodley and UFC castoff Paul Daley could make for bankable matchups, the current welterweight champ appears to be less than impressed with either fighter. Diaz spoke with Ariel Helwani post-fight at Strikeforce's event this past Saturday night, seemingly disinterested in any of the potential title matchups Scott Coker may put together. He had more to say during the night's post-fight press conference.
Strikeforce Champion Nick Diaz Talks Contenders Daley, Woodley
On Woodley: “I don’t want to talk bad about anybody,” Diaz said. “I don’t have anything about him that impresses me. I don’t know much about him. I hear he’s a wrestler. So now that I hear he’s a wrestler, it’s whatever.
On Daley: “I see me putting punches on him, and maybe him taking me down, too, and getting caught in a choke,” Diaz said. “He could run from me, and I could run him down, take him down, and beat him on the ground. I don’t know. I could see that fight going a lot of different ways. I’m not really impressed with Paul Daley as a mixed martial artist.
Here’s to hoping for Daley to get the nod. It could be interesting to see if the ever-confident Diaz decides to abandon his brawling stand up style in favor of a more cautious approach to deal with the Brit’s knockout power. Better that than see Diaz work to stifle takedowns from Woodley for five rounds. Either way, Coker and Co. need to make sure they continue to carry their momentum earned from a great start to 2011. Who would you like to see get the next shot?
