Today I attended the press conference held in the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. with boxing superstar and Filipino Congressman Manny Pacquiao and Senator Harry Reid (D-NV). While the event was not billed as a promotional event for Pacquiao’s upcoming fight with Shane Mosley, boxing is what was on everyone’s minds.

In attendance were Pacquiao, his wife, Sen. Reid and his staff, Top Rank CEO and boxing promoter Bob Arum along with a solid cadre of local and Filipino press.
I’ll have a formal write-up later today, but it’s worth noting that Shane Mosley was not mentioned during formal remarks. Pacquiao and Reid talked a little about their commitment to their countries, the Filipino soldiers of World War II who fought for the U.S. and sundry other tangential topics. They then exchanged flags of their respective countries as gifts. The whole thing last 15 or 20 minutes.
Arum had a smile beaming across his face the entire time. At the conclusion of the event I asked him if this was the most proud he’d ever been of Pacquiao and he offered an emphatic “yes”.
More details here later.
